Summary

A mindfulness mobile app intervention effectively reduced rumination, depression, and anxiety in adolescents. While initial improvements were significant, sustained effects require continued practice beyond the 3-week study period.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Adolescent Mental Health

Background:

  • Rumination is a significant risk factor for internalizing psychopathology in adolescents.
  • Internalizing disorders often emerge during adolescence, necessitating early intervention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a mindfulness mobile app intervention aimed at reducing rumination in adolescents.
  • To assess the impact of the app on depressive and anxiety symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • 152 ruminative adolescents were randomized to a 3-week mindfulness app intervention or a mood monitoring control.
  • Assessments of rumination, depressive, and anxiety symptoms occurred at baseline, post-intervention, and at 6, 12 weeks, and 6 months follow-up.
  • Parental reports on internalizing symptoms were also collected.

Main Results:

  • The mindfulness app group demonstrated significant improvements in rumination, depressive, and anxiety symptoms compared to the control group immediately post-intervention.
  • The reduction in rumination persisted through the 6-week follow-up.
  • Sustained group differences were not consistently observed throughout the entire follow-up period.

Conclusions:

  • Mindfulness mobile app interventions show potential for preventing adolescent psychopathology.
  • Further longitudinal research is recommended to assess affective disorder onset, particularly in underserved populations.
  • The findings suggest that consistent engagement with mindfulness practices may be crucial for maintaining therapeutic gains.
