The face inversion effect does not provide a pure measure of holistic face processing.

The face inversion effect, thought to reflect holistic processing of upright faces, is actually task-dependent and does not specifically correlate with upright face processing. These findings challenge the assumption that inversion effects capture a unitary construct in face perception.
