Summary

Hip fracture recovery is slow, with most survivors not regaining prefracture function within a year. Intensive rehabilitation did not significantly improve functional outcomes or reduce mortality in this study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe 12-month functional recovery following hip fracture.
  • To test if intensive rehabilitation enhances functional recovery compared to standard care.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 75 patients (50 intertrochanteric, 25 subcapital hip fractures).
  • Assessed functional recovery in basic and instrumental activities of daily living, and social/role functioning at 12 months.
  • Compared outcomes between patients receiving experimental versus standard hospital rehabilitation.
