The COVID-19 lockdown in Colombia led to increased consumption of cariogenic foods, particularly among single individuals with children. This dietary shift towards high-sugar and starch foods poses risks to dental health and overall well-being.
Area of Science:
- Nutrition Science
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Pandemic-associated lockdowns can trigger shifts towards 'comfort foods', potentially increasing cariogenic (tooth-decay-causing) food consumption.
- This study investigated dietary pattern changes during lockdown in the Colombian population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess dietary patterns during the COVID-19 lockdown in Colombia.
- To identify specific cariogenic foods consumed more frequently during lockdown.
- To determine factors associated with increased cariogenic food intake during this period.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 489 adults.
- Participants reported food consumption frequency, focusing on cariogenic items.
- Statistical analyses, including a generalized linear model, were used to analyze the data.
Main Results:
- Significant increases in the consumption of sweet breads, flavored milk, sugar-sweetened gums, toffees, chocolates, doughnuts, and grapes were observed during lockdown.
- Being single, having children, and being in lockdown were significantly associated with higher cariogenic food consumption.
Conclusions:
- The lockdown period was associated with detrimental changes in dietary patterns, characterized by increased cariogenic food intake.
- Healthcare professionals and policymakers should consider these findings when planning service reopenings and public health strategies.
