Summary

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) significantly improves exercise capacity in diabetic rats more than continuous training (CT). HIIT did not alter heart rate variability (HRV) in these diabetic models.

Background:

  • High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is explored as an alternative to continuous training (CT) for individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM).
  • HIIT's short duration may enhance exercise adherence in DM patients.
  • Limited data exist on HIIT's effects on heart rate variability (HRV) in DM.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the impact of HIIT versus CT on exercise capacity and HRV in diabetic rats.
  • To evaluate cardiac function in isolated hearts from diabetic and control rats after exercise interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Diabetic (DM) and control (C) rats underwent 4 weeks of either CT or HIIT.
  • Exercise capacity was measured, and HRV was assessed via continuous electrocardiogram.
  • Cardiac function was evaluated in isolated perfused hearts.

Main Results:

  • HIIT resulted in significantly higher exercise capacity (m/min) compared to CT in both DM and control rats.
  • Diabetic rats exhibited lower heart rates (bpm) than controls, irrespective of training type.
  • No significant differences in HRV were observed between training groups or between diabetic and control rats.

Conclusions:

  • Short-term HIIT enhances exercise performance more effectively than CT, even in a diabetic model.
  • HIIT does not appear to significantly alter HRV in diabetic rats.
  • These findings suggest HIIT is a viable exercise strategy for improving physical capacity in diabetes without negatively impacting HRV.
