Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between baseline cognitive function (attention, executive control, working memory) and outcomes of a 3-month WL intervention.
  • To examine the relationship between cognitive function, intervention dropout, adherence, and the amount of weight loss achieved.

Main Methods:

  • 107 overweight/obese adults (mean age 40.9 years) underwent a 3-month WL intervention including behavioral sessions, a calorie-restricted diet, and physical activity.
  • Baseline assessments included cognitive tests (Flanker, Stroop, working memory), demographics, body weight, and cardiovascular fitness.
  • Intervention adherence was monitored weekly through session attendance, diet compliance, and physical activity logs.

Main Results:

  • Baseline attention positively correlated with age, education, attendance, and adherence to diet and physical activity.
  • Executive control and working memory at baseline were associated with the percentage of weight loss achieved.
  • Higher baseline attention was significantly associated with successful completion of the WL intervention, particularly for those achieving greater than 5% or 10% weight loss.

Conclusions:

  • Stronger baseline attention is a predictor of successful completion in a 3-month weight loss intervention.
  • Executive control and working memory capacity are associated with the degree of weight loss achieved in behavioral interventions.
