Background:

Trauma-specific nursing units are crucial for quality trauma care.
Limited research exists on intermediate care units for trauma patients.
This study addresses the gap in knowledge regarding trauma intermediate care units.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the development and implementation of a trauma intermediate care unit at a Level II trauma center.
To share the journey and lessons learned in establishing a specialized trauma care unit.

Main Methods:

Identification of need through patient care review.
Formation of an interdisciplinary team that met for six months.
Evaluation of education, training, equipment, and staffing for the new unit.

Main Results:

Reduced average length of stay for patients in the surgical trauma intensive care unit.
Achieved cost savings for the organization.
Positively impacted patient safety, staff engagement, and financial performance.

Conclusions:

Successful implementation of the intermediate care unit was achieved with leadership support.
Key stakeholders, clear deliverables, and a defined development plan were critical to success.
The new unit demonstrates a viable model for enhancing trauma patient care and resource management.
