    Summary

A new reflective phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (R-PS-FBG) structure was developed. This novel optical device offers improved performance for applications in filtering, wavelength tuning, and sensing.

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Materials Science

    Background:

    • Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are fundamental components in optical fiber sensing and communication.
    • Phase-shifted FBGs (PS-FBGs) offer unique spectral characteristics but can be complex to fabricate.
    • Existing FBG structures may have limitations in sensitivity and resolution for certain applications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and investigate a novel reflective phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (R-PS-FBG) structure.
    • To analyze the spectral properties of the R-PS-FBG numerically and experimentally.
    • To explore the potential applications of the R-PS-FBG in optical signal processing and sensing.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of a novel R-PS-FBG structure combining a conventional FBG and a micromirror with an air gap.

  • Numerical simulation of the R-PS-FBG's reflection and transmission spectra.
  • Experimental investigation of the R-PS-FBG's spectral response by varying mirror reflectance and gap width.
  • Main Results:

    • The R-PS-FBG structure was successfully implemented.
    • Reflection and transmission spectra were analyzed, showing dependence on mirror reflectance and gap width.
    • The R-PS-FBG exhibits characteristics of both a Fabry-Perot interferometer and a PS-FBG.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed R-PS-FBG is easily implementable.
    • The R-PS-FBG demonstrates potential for optical spectrum filtering and wavelength tuning.
    • The R-PS-FBG offers enhanced sensitivity and resolution for multiparameter sensing applications.
