A web-based system (eOncoNote) did not improve patient-reported continuity of care between primary care providers and cancer specialists. However, the system showed potential in reducing patient anxiety during cancer treatment and survivorship.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Health Services Research
- Digital Health
Background:
- Cancer survivors require complex, multidisciplinary care.
- Communication gaps between primary care providers (PCPs) and cancer specialists hinder care coordination.
- Previous studies highlight issues in PCP-specialist communication.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate if a web- and text-based system (eOncoNote) improves patient-reported continuity of care.
- To assess the system's impact on communication between PCPs and oncologists/nurses.
- To examine effects on patients in treatment and survivorship phases.
Main Methods:
- Pragmatic randomized controlled trial with 173 patients.
- Intervention group used eOncoNote alongside usual communication; control group used usual communication only.
- Primary outcome: patient-reported continuity of care. Secondary outcomes: anxiety, depression, patient experience.
Main Results:
- No significant improvement in patient-reported continuity of care or patient experience.
- No significant effect on depression scores.
- Significant reduction in patient anxiety (GAD-7 scores) in both treatment and survivorship phases.
Conclusions:
- eOncoNote access did not significantly improve patient-reported continuity of care.
- The eOncoNote intervention may help reduce patient anxiety.
- Further research may explore optimizing digital tools for cancer care communication.

Cancer Therapies
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...
