Summary

Titanium ventilation tubes (VTs) showed a higher rate of early extrusion compared to fluoroplastic VTs. However, overall complication rates for VT insertion were similar between the two materials in this study.

Background:

  • Tympanostomy ventilation tube (VT) insertion is a common procedure for managing otitis media with effusion (OME) in children.
  • While various VT materials exist, titanium VTs are less studied compared to traditional fluoroplastic VTs.
  • Understanding material-specific outcomes is crucial for optimizing pediatric ear ventilation procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the postoperative outcomes and complication rates of titanium VTs versus fluoroplastic VTs.
  • To evaluate differences in extrusion, infection, otorrhea, tube obstruction, and residual perforation between the two VT materials.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, age-matched case-control study of 34 patients undergoing bilateral myringotomy with VT insertion.
  • 17 patients received titanium VTs, and 17 received fluoroplastic VTs.
  • Follow-up for 18 months, monitoring early and late postoperative complications.

Main Results:

  • Early extrusion (≤6 months) was the most frequent complication (67.6%), occurring more often in the titanium group.

  • Ventilation tube insertion carries risks of complications, with varying degrees.
  • While titanium VTs showed higher early extrusion, overall complication rates did not differ significantly between titanium and fluoroplastic VTs in this cohort.
  • Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings and assess generalizability.
