Sterile Alpha Motif and Histidine-aspartate Domain containing protein 1 (SAMHD1) protein inhibits exogenous DNA expression by repressing transcription. This novel function, independent of its known activities, involves upregulating interferon regulatory factor-1 (IRF1).
