Insights

This review summarizes Candida species prevalence and antifungal susceptibility in Malaysia. Candida albicans is the most common species, with caspofungin showing the highest efficacy.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Limited data exists on the epidemiology and antifungal susceptibility of Candida species infections in Malaysia.
  • This study addresses the need for a comprehensive overview of current research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and compare studies on Candida species prevalence.
  • To analyze antifungal susceptibility patterns of Candida infections in Peninsular Malaysia.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of 22 studies published between 2009 and 2018.
  • Data sourced from PubMed and Google Scholar using specific keywords.
  • Analysis of 35,608 Candida isolates and antifungal susceptibility data from 8 studies.

Main Results:

  • Nineteen Candida species were identified, with Candida albicans being predominant (66.3%).
  • Other common species include Candida glabrata (11.7%), Candida parapsilosis (10.7%), and Candida tropicalis (9.5%).
  • Caspofungin demonstrated the highest antifungal susceptibility (99%), while itraconazole showed the lowest (45%).

Conclusions:

  • This review provides a comprehensive summary of predominant Candida species and their antifungal susceptibility in Peninsular Malaysia.
  • Highlights the need for ongoing surveillance and updated treatment guidelines.
