A novel extended external rhinoplasty technique successfully removed a complex nasal dermoid cyst with intracranial extension in a pediatric patient. This approach offers excellent surgical access and cosmetic outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Otolaryngology
- Pediatric Surgery
- Neurosurgery
Background:
- Nasal dermoid cysts with intracranial extension are rare congenital malformations.
- Surgical management requires careful planning to ensure complete removal and minimize complications.
Observation:
- A 3-year-old patient presented with a nasal dermoid cyst extending into the intracranial space.
- An extended external rhinoplasty approach utilizing bilateral marginal and alar base incisions was employed.
Findings:
- The surgical approach provided adequate exposure for cyst removal.
- It facilitated necessary nasal bone osteotomies and access to the skull base.
- The procedure resulted in a cosmetically acceptable scar.
Implications:
- This technique offers a viable surgical option for complex pediatric nasal dermoid cysts.
- It demonstrates the feasibility of achieving complete resection with good aesthetic results.
- The approach may be beneficial for similar congenital sinonasal tumors.

The temporal bone forms the lower lateral side of the skull. The temporal bone is subdivided into several regions. The flattened upper portion is the squamous portion of the temporal bone. Below this area and projecting anteriorly is the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, which forms the posterior portion of the zygomatic arch. Posteriorly is the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. Projecting...
