Researchers isolated two new compounds, laurenolide A and B, from Palisada intermedia. These natural products, along with known compounds, showed weak or no activity against cancer cell lines.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Marine Natural Products
- Organic Chemistry
Background:
- Marine organisms, such as algae, are a rich source of novel bioactive compounds.
- Palisada intermedia, a marine alga, has not been extensively studied for its chemical constituents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new chemical entities from Palisada intermedia.
- To evaluate the cytotoxic activity of isolated compounds and extracts against cancer cell lines.
Main Methods:
- Phytochemical investigation involving extraction and isolation techniques.
- Structure elucidation using 1D and 2D-NMR spectroscopy and HR-ESI-MS.
- Cytotoxicity assays against MCF-7 and NCI-H460 cancer cell lines.
Main Results:
- Two new sesquiterpene lactones, laurenolide A (1) and laurenolide B (2), were identified.
- Six known compounds, including fatty acids and sterols, were also isolated.
- The isolated compounds and various extracts exhibited weak or no significant cytotoxic activity.
Conclusions:
- Palisada intermedia yielded novel sesquiterpene lactones, expanding the known chemical diversity of marine natural products.
- The tested compounds and extracts did not demonstrate potent anticancer properties against the evaluated cell lines.
