Background:

Informed consent is a cornerstone of ethical and legal healthcare practice, empowering patients in decision-making.
This review examines the influence of digital technology on the informed consent process within surgical settings.

Approach:

A systematic literature search was conducted across major databases (MEDLINE/CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science) in November 2021.
Included were randomized controlled trials comparing digital and standard consent methods in surgery, with quality assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool.

Key Points:

Analysis of 40 studies across 15 surgical specialties revealed digital consent positively impacted early comprehension in 70% of studies.
Most studies found no significant difference in patient satisfaction or anxiety levels.
Limited data exists on the practical feasibility of digital consent interventions.

Conclusions:

Digital technologies enhance early comprehension in surgical informed consent without adverse effects on patient satisfaction or anxiety.
Further investigation is recommended into the feasibility of digital consent for vulnerable populations and in demanding surgical environments.
