Antiasthma Drugs: Mast Cell Stabilizers and Anti-IgE Drugs

391
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition for which new therapeutic avenues, including anti-inflammatory drugs like mast cell stabilizers and anti-IgE treatments, continue to be developed.
Mast cell stabilizers, such as cromolyn (also known as sodium cromoglycate) and nedocromil (Tilade), are effective drugs in asthma management. These stabilizers hinder histamine release by skillfully obstructing the activation of mast cells and other cellular entities. Notably, they navigate this task without...

Area of Science:

  • Clinical immunology
  • Laboratory medicine

Background:

  • Laboratories must provide clinicians with updated reference intervals.
  • Recent data on adult total IgE reference intervals for Scandinavian populations are scarce.
  • This study aimed to estimate reference intervals for healthy Norwegian adults.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish updated reference intervals for total immunoglobulin E (IgE) in a healthy Norwegian adult population.
  • To address the lack of recent data on IgE levels in this demographic.
  • To provide a basis for critical review and updating of current clinical laboratory practices.

Main Methods:

  • A reference interval study was conducted following CLSI guidelines.
  • Samples were collected from 252 presumably healthy adult participants from a regional blood donation program.
  • Total IgE was measured using the ImmunoCAP platform, traceable to the WHO-reference standard.

Main Results:

  • The upper 95% total IgE reference limit was estimated at 302 kU/L (90% CI: 177-388 kU/L).
  • The 97.5th percentile was estimated at 391 kU/L (90% CI: 344-560 kU/L).
  • No significant difference in total IgE levels was observed between participants with and without self-reported allergic diseases.

Conclusions:

  • Current adult total IgE reference intervals, established decades ago, are likely outdated.
  • This study's findings suggest significantly higher total IgE values in healthy Norwegian adults compared to historical intervals.
  • Clinical laboratories should critically review and update their total IgE reference intervals based on current population data.
