Summary
Innate lymphoid cells type 1 (ILC1s) are impaired in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients but can eliminate leukemia stem cells (LSCs) and improve survival. Targeting ILC1s offers a potential therapeutic strategy for AML.
Area of Science:
- Immunology
- Hematology
- Oncology
Background:
- Innate lymphocytes, particularly type 1 innate lymphoid cells (ILC1s), play a role in cancer immunosurveillance.
- While mouse ILC1s show anti-leukemia activity, the function of human ILC1s in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is not well understood.
Conclusions:
- Human ILC1s possess anti-leukemia functions by targeting LSCs.
- Restoring or enhancing ILC1 function could be a therapeutic strategy for AML.
- Generated ILC1s from UCB stem cells may provide a source for adoptive immunotherapy in AML.

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine
5.0K
Combining two or more treatment methods increases the life span of cancer patients while reducing damage to vital organs or tissue from the overuse of a single treatment. Combination therapy also targets different cancer-inducing pathways, thus reducing the chances of developing resistance to treatment.
The combination of the drug acetazolamide and sulforaphane is a good example of combination therapy to treat cancer. The cells in the interior of a large tumor often die due to the hypoxic and...

Regulation of Hematopoietic Stem Cells
3.3K
All blood and immune cells are produced from the multipotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) by the process of hematopoiesis. However, they all have a limited life span. In addition, many are depleted in immune surveillance or combatting an injury or infection. This makes blood one of the most regenerative tissues. Hematopoiesis helps replenish these blood and immune cells, restoring the body's normal functioning. However, overproduction of blood and immune cells can make them cancerous or...

Differentiation of Common Myeloid Progenitor Cells
3.3K
Common myeloid progenitors (CMPs) are oligopotent cells that can differentiate into granulocytes and macrophages. Granulocytes and macrophages are essential for protecting the body against bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. They migrate from the bone marrow into the circulating blood to reach specific tissue sites where they differentiate and help in immune surveillance. However, they survive only for a few days and must be continuously made available to the organism to maintain a robust...

Targeted Cancer Therapies
7.8K
The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.

Cancer Stem Cells and Tumor Maintenance
5.0K
Early diagnosis and treatment can often cure cancer. However, even with treatment, residual cells called cancer stem cells (CSC) might remain, often causing tumor recurrence. These cancer stem cells possess the potential for self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation and are often responsible for the therapeutic resistance displayed in most cancers.
Cancer stem cells are thought to originate from tissue-specific normal stem cells or progenitor cells. The normal stem cells usually reside in...
