Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Extrapyramidal symptoms are common in normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).
  • Parkinsonism as the primary presentation of NPH is infrequent.
  • This presentation can lead to diagnostic challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the diagnostic difficulties associated with NPH presenting as Parkinson's syndrome.
  • To emphasize the importance of considering NPH in patients with parkinsonism unresponsive to standard treatments.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical presentations and diagnostic approaches for NPH.
  • Analysis of cases where Parkinsonism was the predominant feature.

Main Results:

  • Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) can manifest with parkinsonian features.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lack of response to Parkinson's disease therapies should raise suspicion for NPH.
  • Conclusions:

    • Parkinsonism unresponsive to therapy warrants investigation for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).
    • Early recognition of NPH in such cases is crucial for timely intervention.
