T Cell Types and Functions01:24

T Cell Types and Functions

1.2K
When T cells with CD4 markers are activated, they give rise to two types of effector cells: helper T cells and regulatory T cells. Meanwhile, T cells with CD8 markers differentiate into effector cytotoxic T cells. The differentiation of CD4 T cells into helper T cell subsets, such as Th1, Th2, and Th17 cells, is dependent on the antigen type, antigen-presenting cell, and regulatory cytokines.
Th1 cells stimulate dendritic cells to express necessary co-stimulatory molecules on their surfaces for...

Autoimmune Disorders01:29

Autoimmune Disorders

591
Autoimmune diseases are a group of disorders in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells, tissues, and organs. This results from an overactive immune response against substances and tissues normally present in the body. Let's delve into the concept and mechanism of autoimmune diseases from an immune system point of view, explore different causes and examples of such diseases, and discuss potential solutions.

Skin Diseases and Disorders01:23

Skin Diseases and Disorders

4.0K
Skin is the first line of defense and encounters a variety of microbes. Some pathogenic strains are often the cause of a broad range of infections of the skin and other body systems. These conditions can affect people of all ages and may have different causes, including genetic factors, infections, autoimmune reactions, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.
Gram-positive Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. are responsible for many of the most common skin infections. However, many...

EPS and iPS Cells in Disease Research

2.8K
Embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells are excellent models for disease research because of their ability to self-renew and differentiate into most cell types. Somatic cells from a patient are isolated and reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells or iPSCs. These iPSCs are later differentiated into the desired cell type, which mirrors the diseased cell of the patient. In this way, disease models have been created for investigating diseases such as Down syndrome, type I diabetes,...

Pleiotropy01:33

Pleiotropy

40.8K
Pleiotropy is the phenomenon in which a single gene impacts multiple, seemingly unrelated phenotypic traits. For example, defects in the SOX10 gene cause Waardenburg Syndrome Type 4, or WS4, which can cause defects in pigmentation, hearing impairments, and an absence of intestinal contractions necessary for elimination. This diversity of phenotypes results from the expression pattern of SOX10 in early embryonic and fetal development. SOX10 is found in neural crest cells that form melanocytes,...

Papillary Dermis01:11

Papillary Dermis

3.1K
Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.
Papillary Layer
The papillary layer is made of loose, areolar connective tissue, which means the collagen...

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Rheumatology
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • Coexistence of systemic sclerosis and psoriasis is uncommon.
  • The relationship between these two distinct conditions remains under-explored in medical literature.

Observation:

  • A 70-year-old female patient presented with concurrent diagnoses of diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis and psoriasis vulgaris.
  • The patient received a treatment regimen including oral azathioprine and prednisolone, alongside topical corticosteroids and calcipotriols.

Findings:

  • Significant improvement in skin erythema and plaques was observed within one week of treatment initiation.
  • Systemic symptoms, including cold-induced discoloration, regurgitation, and dysphagia, showed abatement after three months of therapy.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential therapeutic approach for managing the rare co-occurrence of systemic sclerosis and psoriasis.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the pathobiology and optimize treatment strategies for patients with both conditions.
