Long-term Depression01:03

Long-term Depression

2.6K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

151
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Stress and Mental Health

195
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.4K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Depression: Overview

314
Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...

Cross-Sectional Research

11.5K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Area of Science:

  • Social Science
  • Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Financial hardship is a known risk factor for depression.
  • The specific pathways and mediating factors, such as self-esteem, require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the effect of changes in financial hardship on depression.
  • To determine if self-esteem mediates the relationship between financial hardship and depression.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 99,588 observations of 15,331 individuals across 10 waves of the Korean Welfare Panel Study.
  • Employed generalized estimation equations to analyze the association between financial hardship changes and depression.
  • Assessed the mediating role of self-esteem in this relationship.

Main Results:

  • Changes in financial hardship were significantly associated with depression.
  • Experiencing severe or increasing financial hardship strongly predicted depression.
  • Self-esteem mediated the link, with persistent hardship leading to lower self-esteem and subsequent depression.

Conclusions:

  • Financial hardship is a critical factor influencing depression.
  • Interventions targeting financial difficulties and psychological well-being are essential for depression management.
