Modeling and Similitude

313
Scaled modeling is a fundamental technique in engineering, enabling the study of large and complex systems by creating smaller, manageable replicas that recreate critical characteristics of the original. In hydrology and civil infrastructure, for example, scaled models of dams help analyze water flow, turbulence, and pressure. This method allows for accurate predictions of real-world behavior within a controlled environment, significantly reducing the cost and time involved in full-scale...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Anesthesiology
  • Healthcare Simulation

Background:

  • The National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) implemented a Continued Professional Certification (CPC) Program in 2016.
  • This program aims to foster lifelong learning and ensure ongoing competency for certified registered nurse anesthesiologists (CRNAs).
  • Simulation-based assessment is under consideration by the NBCRNA for integration into the CPC Program.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate simulation scenarios.
  • To create and validate assessment tools for these scenarios.
  • To evaluate the suitability of these tools for the NBCRNA's CPC Program.

Main Methods:

  • A modified Delphi method was employed.
  • An expert panel of eight CRNAs participated.
  • The panel assessed the validity and reliability of four simulation scenarios and four associated assessment tools.

Main Results:

  • Expert panelists achieved ≥ 75% agreement on the validity of all simulation scenarios and assessment tools.
  • Content validity index values for assessment tools ranged from 0.960 to 0.993.
  • A positive correlation was observed between expert panel scores and performance levels on assessment tools.

Conclusions:

  • Four simulation scenarios and their corresponding assessment tools were successfully validated.
  • The validated tools demonstrated high content validity and reliability.
  • These simulation-based tools offer potential advantages over traditional assessment methods for CRNA competency evaluation.
