Background:

  • Ascariasis, the migration of Ascaris worms, is a known phenomenon in humans and other animals, affecting organs like the liver and biliary tree.
  • Previous studies have documented Ascaris suum and Toxocara vitulorum in the livers of swine and buffalo, respectively.

Observation:

  • An 8-cm adult male Parascaris was discovered at the junction of the lobar-left hepatic bile duct in a 6-month-old Persian Kurdish filly.
  • The filly's death was attributed to oleander (Nerium oleander) intoxication.

Findings:

  • The anatomical location of the parasite within the hepatic bile duct suggests anterior entry via the duodenum and major duodenal papilla.
  • Given the short post-mortem interval (4 hours) and the distance from the entry point, the migration into the biliary tree is presumed to have occurred ante-mortem.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the potential for Parascaris infection to cause hepatic and pancreatic dysfunction in horses.
  • Veterinarians should include Parascaris infection in the differential diagnosis for horses presenting with signs of liver or pancreatic disease.
