Insights
Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation can cause thrombus formation, obstructing coronary arteries. Transthoracic echocardiography offers a non-invasive method to assess coronary blood flow patency despite LVAD interference.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Medicine
- Medical Devices
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Severe heart failure necessitates Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) support.
- LVADs carry a risk of thrombus formation, potentially leading to coronary artery occlusion.
Observation:
- LVADs can create an echogenic window, complicating echocardiographic views.
- Careful transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) allows for observation of coronary artery flow.
Findings:
- TTE can non-invasively and immediately evaluate coronary flow patency.
- This method helps detect potential thrombus-related coronary artery occlusion.
Implications:
- Echocardiography provides a crucial, immediate, non-invasive tool for monitoring LVAD patients.
- Early detection of coronary complications can improve patient outcomes and management.
Abstract:
Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is essential for patients with severe heart failure, but there is a risk of thrombus formation on the aortic root and cusps, leading to coronary artery occlusion. Even with the narrowing of the echo-window due to LVAD, careful observation of coronary flow by transthoracic echocardiography can evaluate the patency of coronary flow non-invasively and immediately.
