Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Education
  • Medical Technology

Background:

  • Vitreoretinal surgical education traditionally relies on in-person observation.
  • Geographic and physical constraints limit access to expert surgical mentorship.
  • There is a need for innovative remote training solutions in surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To demonstrate the potential of real-time, three-dimensional (3D) surgical telementoring.
  • To enhance vitreoretinal surgical education through advanced technology.
  • To assess the feasibility of live 3D surgical video streaming for training.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a high dynamic range 3D surgical camera (NGENUITY) for video capture.
  • Employed a 4K video capture device (Magewell USB 4K) and video conferencing software (Zoom).
  • Enabled remote viewing in 2D on computers and 3D with virtual reality headsets (Oculus Quest 2).

Main Results:

  • Successfully live-streamed ten surgical cases in real time to remote surgeons.
  • Achieved visualization of surgical details with low latency.
  • Ancillary equipment costs remained under $1,000, excluding the camera and computers.

Conclusions:

  • 3D surgical video streaming is achievable in real time with minimal latency.
  • Low-cost equipment and software facilitate effective telementoring.
  • This technology removes traditional barriers in surgical education and mentorship.
