Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify predictors of SuperAging (SA) in community-dwelling older adults.
  • To analyze baseline cognitive performance as a predictor of future SA status.

  • Longitudinal study of 96 community-dwelling older adults (aged 80-101).
  • Participants were tested in 2012 and 2018.
  • SuperAgers were defined by high memory recall and normal performance in non-memory tasks; baseline composite scores (immediate memory, processing speed, executive functions) from 2012 were analyzed as predictors of 2018 SA status.

Main Results:

  • 19 SuperAgers (SA) and 77 non-SA were identified; groups did not differ in age, education, or sex.
  • Logistic regression identified three predictors of SA: processing speed (p=0.006), sex (p=0.015), and age (p=0.045).
  • Baseline processing speed, particularly performance on the Prague Stroop Test-Dots and Digit Symbol Substitution Test, significantly predicted SA status.

Conclusions:

  • SuperAging status can be predicted by baseline processing speed, sex, and age.
  • The findings support the processing speed theory of healthy aging.
  • Higher processing speed is a key indicator of cognitive resilience in aging.
