Summary

Fasciculations in motor neuron disease patients did not change significantly between wakefulness and sleep stages. This suggests fasciculations are unaffected by the central nervous system excitability changes during sleep.

Background:

  • Motor neuron disease (MND) is characterized by progressive degeneration of motor neurons.
  • Fasciculations, or muscle twitches, are a common symptom in MND.
  • Sleep is associated with decreased central nervous system excitability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the quantitative changes in fasciculation potentials during different sleep stages in patients with motor neuron disease.
  • To determine if sleep-induced changes in central nervous system excitability affect fasciculation frequency or intensity.

  • Quantitative analysis of fasciculation potentials was performed.
  • Electrophysiological recordings were conducted in 10 patients with motor neuron disease.
