Insights
The IMPACT-III questionnaire reliably measures health-related quality of life in French children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This validated instrument is useful for assessing HRQoL in pediatric IBD patients.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric gastroenterology
- Health outcomes research
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) significantly impacts the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children.
- Accurate assessment of HRQoL is crucial for managing pediatric IBD.
- The IMPACT-III questionnaire is a tool designed to measure HRQoL.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the reliability and validity of the IMPACT-III questionnaire in French children diagnosed with IBD.
- To determine if the IMPACT-III is a suitable instrument for evaluating HRQoL in this population.
Main Methods:
- A validation study included 84 French children and adolescents with IBD.
- Participants completed the IMPACT-III and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 Generic Core Scale (PedsQL).
- Internal consistency (Cronbach α), factor analysis, and concurrent validity (Spearman correlation) were used.
Main Results:
- The IMPACT-III demonstrated good reliability across its domains (0.674-0.863).
- Factor analysis identified a robust 3-domain structure: Concerns, Body Image and Physical Condition, and Symptoms and Socializing.
- Discriminant validity was confirmed by significant differences in scores between patients with inactive and active disease.
Conclusions:
- The IMPACT-III questionnaire is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring HRQoL in French children with IBD.
- The findings support the use of IMPACT-III for clinical assessment and research in pediatric IBD.
Objectives:
This study assessed the reliability and validity of the IMPACT-III questionnaire, a health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instrument, in French children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Methods:
Eighty-four children and adolescents (45 boys, aged 14.3 ± 2.7 years) were included in a validation study of the IMPACT-III questionnaire. Patients completed 2 questionnaires for measuring HRQoL: the IMPACT-III and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 Generic Core Scale (PedsQL). Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach α. Factor analysis was performed on data from the IMPACT-III to help construct domains. Concurrent validity was assessed by calculating Spearman correlation coefficients.
Results:
Cronbach α for the PedsQL total score was good (0.89). The most robust factor solution was a 3-domain structure: (a) Concerns, (b) Body Image and Physical Condition, and (c) Symptoms and Socializing. All domains had good reliability (0.674-0.863). Only 2 items had to be removed. Discriminant validity was demonstrated by significant differences ( P < 0.001) in median IMPACT-III scores between inactive and active disease for the total score (83.3 vs 72.0), and for Concerns ( P < 0.002) and Symptoms and Socializing ( P < 0.001).
Conclusions:
These results suggest that IMPACT-III appears to be a useful instrument for measuring HRQoL in French children with IBD.

Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
