Autoimmune Disorders01:29

Autoimmune Disorders

589
Autoimmune diseases are a group of disorders in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells, tissues, and organs. This results from an overactive immune response against substances and tissues normally present in the body. Let's delve into the concept and mechanism of autoimmune diseases from an immune system point of view, explore different causes and examples of such diseases, and discuss potential solutions.

Antigens Involved in Adaptive Immunity

610
An antigen is any substance the immune system identifies as foreign and potentially harmful to the body, prompting an immune response. Antigens have two functional properties: immunogenicity and reactivity. Immunogenicity is the ability of an antigen to stimulate a specific immune response. At the same time, reactivity describes the antigen's ability to react with the cells and antibodies produced in response to it.

Complete antigens possess both immunogenicity and...

Summary

This study found little evidence linking polypropylene hernia mesh to autoimmune diseases. While biomaterials can cause foreign body reactions, this does not equate to autoimmunity, and causality remains unproven.

Area of Science:

  • Medical research
  • Immunology
  • Surgical materials science

Background:

  • Increasing patient reports suggest autoimmune or allergic reactions to surgical mesh post-hernia repair.
  • Hypersensitivity or autoimmunity caused by surgical mesh has not been scientifically proven.
  • Distinguishing foreign body reactions from true autoimmunity is crucial.

Conclusions:

  • Limited evidence supports polypropylene mesh causing autoimmunity.
  • Multiple autoimmunity triggers and genetic predisposition complicate establishing a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
  • A chronic foreign body reaction to biomaterials is distinct from autoimmunity.
