Cancer Prevention02:59

Cancer Prevention

6.2K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Esophageal Strictures-I: Introduction01:30

Esophageal Strictures-I: Introduction

223
Esophageal strictures involve abnormal narrowing or tightening of the esophagus. They vary in length and severity, ranging from mild constriction to complete obstruction, and are classified as benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Etiology
The primary cause of esophageal strictures is long-standing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), accounting for about 70 to 80% of adult cases. Chronic acid reflux can lead to injury and scarring of the esophageal lining, culminating in...

Barrett Esophagus-I: Introduction01:21

Barrett Esophagus-I: Introduction

154
Barrett's esophagus is a medical condition where the esophageal mucosa is significantly damaged by stomach acid or other digestive fluids, often due to long-term exposure associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In GERD, a weakened or abnormally relaxed lower esophageal sphincter allows stomach acid to flow persistently into the esophagus.
This constant acid exposure transforms the esophagus's pink mucosal lining (stratified squamous epithelium) into a type of lining more...

Barrett Esophagus-II: Clinical Manifestations and Management

247
Individuals with Barrett's esophagus are often asymptomatic, but they may experience symptoms commonly associated with GERD, such as heartburn and acid regurgitation. Additional symptoms can include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, unintentional weight loss, blood in the stool (which may appear black, tarry, or bloody), and episodes of vomiting.
To diagnose Barrett's esophagus, healthcare providers often recommend an endoscopy for those showing symptoms of acid reflux. The procedure...

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

12.1K
The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...

Peptic Ulcer Disease I: Introduction01:30

Peptic Ulcer Disease I: Introduction

244
Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) is characterized by mucosal excavation in the esophagus, stomach, pylorus, or duodenum. It can manifest as acute or chronic based on the extent and duration of mucosal involvement.
An acute ulcer, marked by superficial erosion and minimal inflammation, swiftly resolves upon identifying and addressing the underlying cause. In contrast, a chronic ulcer persists, potentially eroding through the muscular wall and forming fibrous tissue.
Peptic ulcers can also be...

Summary

Dietary choices significantly impact Upper Aerodigestive Tract (UADT) cancer risk. Whole grains, Mediterranean diet adherence, yogurt, and coffee intake show protective effects, while refined grains increase UADT cancer risk.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Nutritional Science
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Upper Aerodigestive Tract (UADT) cancers represent a significant global health burden with high morbidity.
  • While smoking and alcohol are primary risk factors, other contributing factors, particularly dietary, require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify specific dietary factors associated with the prevention of Upper Aerodigestive Tract (UADT) cancers.
  • To explore the role of diet in mitigating UADT cancer risk beyond established factors.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature review was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar databases.
  • Studies published between January 2001 and November 2021 were analyzed for associations between dietary intake and UADT cancer risk.

Main Results:

  • Refined grains consumption was linked to increased UADT cancer risk, whereas whole grains demonstrated a protective effect.
  • Higher intake of whole grains, yellow/orange vegetables, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, yogurt, and coffee consumption (≥3 cups/day) were inversely associated with UADT cancer risk.
  • Regular cannabis smoking was observed to have carcinogenic potential for UADT cancer.

Conclusions:

  • Dietary factors, including whole grains, Mediterranean diet, yogurt, and coffee, play a substantial role in UADT cancer prevention.
  • Further basic research and the identification of biomarkers are crucial for developing effective chemoprevention strategies for UADT cancer.
