Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters

2.3K
The introduction of polyesters has brought major development to the textile industry. The wrinkle-free behavior of polyester blends has eliminated the need for starching and ironing clothes.
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the...

Summary

The double-flanged polypropylene technique for intraocular lens (IOL) scleral fixation is stable when performed correctly. However, complications like flange exposure and retinal detachment can occur, particularly with short scleral tunnels.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Techniques
  • Ocular Implants

Background:

  • Scleral fixation of intraocular lenses (IOLs) is crucial for managing complex cataract cases.
  • The double-flanged polypropylene technique offers an alternative fixation method.
  • Long-term outcomes and complication profiles require thorough evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the 5-year outcomes of the double-flanged polypropylene technique for IOL scleral fixation.
  • To identify and analyze long-term complications associated with this technique.
  • To assess the stability and safety of the double-flanged polypropylene method in various IOL fixation scenarios.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective case series included 71 eyes undergoing double-flanged polypropylene IOL scleral fixation.
  • Data collected included LogMAR visual acuity and complications over a mean follow-up of 28.2 months.
  • Complications monitored: polypropylene resistance, conjunctival erosion/inflammation, flange exposure, internalization, endophthalmitis, retinal detachment, and cystoid macular edema.

Main Results:

  • 173 flanges were performed with a mean follow-up of 28.2 months.
  • Complications included sub-Tenon flanges (7.5%), flange exposure (2.89%), conjunctival inflammation (1 case), and internalized flanges (2.2%).
  • Retinal detachment and cystoid macular edema each occurred in 4.22% of eyes; no endophthalmitis was reported.

Conclusions:

  • The double-flanged technique demonstrates stability when surgical procedures are meticulously followed.
  • Complications are more likely with inadequate scleral tunnel length or non-buried flanges.
  • Careful technique is essential to minimize risks and ensure favorable long-term outcomes.
