Background:

  • The cingulum bundle (CB) is implicated in schizophrenia, but its specific role in auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) is underexplored.
  • Previous studies suggest a link between reduced CB integrity and AVH severity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the integrity of the cingulum bundle (CB) in schizophrenia patients with and without auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) compared to healthy controls.
  • To utilize a symptom-based approach with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to assess CB integrity.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 92 participants (schizophrenia with AVH, schizophrenia without AVH, healthy controls) aged 18-50.
  • Conducted DTI to measure fractional anisotropy (FA) in the CB.
  • Performed clinical assessments for symptom severity.

Main Results:

  • Schizophrenia patients with AVH showed significantly lower FA values in the left cingulate gyrus (CG) part of the CB compared to schizophrenia patients without AVH and healthy controls.
  • No significant difference in CB integrity was found between schizophrenia patients without AVH and healthy controls.

Conclusions:

  • Reduced integrity of the left cingulum bundle (CB) may be specific to schizophrenia with auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs).
  • These preliminary findings warrant further investigation and replication to understand the role of CB disruption in AVH-positive schizophrenia.
