Summary

Isolated Left Bundle Branch Block (LBBB) in adults is linked to reduced maximal functional capacity, even without heart disease or with an active lifestyle. Further research is needed to understand this association.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess maximal functional capacity in adults with isolated LBBB.
  • To compare functional capacity to predicted values from a healthy population.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study involving adults with isolated LBBB from academic hospital clinics.
  • Maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) were utilized.
  • Peak oxygen consumption (peakVO2) was the primary outcome measure.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-seven participants (18 women, 9 men) with a median age of 62 years were included.
  • Most participants reported high or moderate physical activity levels.
  • Reduced maximal functional capacity was observed, with a median peakVO2 of 19.3 ml/kg/min (88% of predicted).

Conclusions:

  • Adults with isolated LBBB demonstrate diminished maximal functional capacity.
  • This reduction occurs irrespective of underlying cardiac disease or an active lifestyle.
  • No adverse cardiovascular events were reported during the follow-up period.
