Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

139
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Other Pulmonary Disorders

Respiratory disorders encompass a range of conditions with varying levels of severity. Asthma, marked by chronic airway inflammation and hypersensitivity, is one such condition. It can lead to airway obstruction due to factors like bronchial spasms, mucosal edema, increased mucus secretion, or epithelial damage. Asthma triggers are diverse, ranging from allergens to emotional upset, and treatment focuses on both immediate relief through bronchodilators and long-term inflammation suppression.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Canine Oncology
  • Pulmonary Neoplasms

Background:

  • A 12-year-old castrated male Beagle presented with anorexia and cough.
  • Progressive weight loss and respiratory distress were noted over one month.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To diagnose and characterize a pulmonary tumor in a dog.
  • To investigate the histopathological and immunohistochemical features of the canine lung tumor.

Main Methods:

  • Computed tomography (CT) revealed diffuse lung opacification.
  • Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and necropsy were performed.
  • Histopathology and immunohistochemistry (cytokeratin, TTF-1, vimentin, CD204, chromogranin A, synaptophysin) were utilized.

Main Results:

  • CT showed extensive lung consolidation.
  • FNA suggested a round cell tumor.
  • Histopathology confirmed a solid adenocarcinoma with neoplastic cells positive for cytokeratin and thyroid transcription factor-1.

Conclusions:

  • The canine lung tumor was diagnosed as a solid adenocarcinoma.
  • The tumor exhibited aggressive behavior, leading to euthanasia.
  • Immunohistochemical markers aided in tumor classification.
