The physical assessment examines the patient for objective data that defines the patient's condition, and aids in formulating the nursing care plan. The purpose of physical assessment is a health status appraisal, which includes identifying health problems, and establishing a database for nursing intervention.
The principles to begin the physical assessment include conducting a comprehensive or problem-related history in a quiet, well-lit room, emphasizing privacy and comfort for the...

Summary

The Physical Body Experiences Questionnaire simplified for Active aGing (PBE-QAG) shows good fit but poor targeting for community-dwelling adults. Further validation with more challenging items is recommended for accurate body awareness measurement.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Rehabilitation Science
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Body awareness is crucial for physical activity and independent living in aging adults.
  • The Physical Body Experiences Questionnaire simplified for Active aGing (PBE-QAG) aims to measure body awareness during physical activity.
  • Rasch Measurement Theory provides a framework for evaluating the psychometric properties of measurement tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the structural validity of the PBE-QAG using Rasch Measurement Theory.
  • To assess the PBE-QAG's suitability for measuring body awareness in community-dwelling adults, including older adults and those with chronic stroke.

Main Methods:

  • Community-dwelling adults (n=530), older adults (n=133), and adults with chronic stroke (n=36) completed the PBE-QAG.
  • Rasch Measurement Theory analysis evaluated item and person fit, targeting, unidimensionality, reliability, and differential item functioning.
  • Item deletion and rescoring were performed to improve model fit.

Main Results:

  • The PBE-QAG demonstrated unidimensionality and acceptable item fit across all participant groups after item adjustments.
  • A minimal floor effect (5.28%) and no ceiling effect were observed.
  • While item and person fit were good, targeting of the PBE-QAG was suboptimal, indicating a potential issue with item difficulty.

Conclusions:

  • The PBE-QAG exhibits good psychometric properties regarding item and person fit but requires improvement in targeting for community-dwelling adults.
  • The current PBE-QAG is not recommended for use in its present form.
  • Further validation is suggested, incorporating more challenging items and evaluating the questionnaire in larger populations, particularly individuals with stroke.
