Summary

Prostate needle biopsies can cause temporary bacteremia (bacteria in the blood). In this study, most cases of bacteremia originated from pre-existing urinary tract infections, not the biopsy itself.

Background:

  • Prostate needle biopsy is a common urological procedure.
  • Bacteremia following invasive procedures can lead to serious infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence and source of bacteremia after perineal prostate needle biopsy.
  • To assess the risk of developing septicemia post-biopsy without antibiotic prophylaxis.

Main Methods:

  • Bacteriological analysis of blood cultures from 40 patients undergoing perineal prostate needle biopsy.
  • Correlation of blood culture results with urine cultures and clinical outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Four out of 40 patients (10%) had positive blood cultures shortly after biopsy.
  • No patients developed septicemia.
  • Three of the four bacteremic patients had concurrent, unsuspected urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  • Organisms isolated from blood and urine were identical in UTI patients.

Conclusions:

  • Transient bacteremia can occur after prostate needle biopsy.
  • Pre-existing urinary tract infections are a likely source of bacteremia in this context.
  • Prophylactic antibiotics may not be necessary for all patients undergoing prostate biopsy, but UTI screening is important.
