Summary

Children with listening difficulties (LiD) show poorer auditory processing and brainstem function compared to typically developing peers. Combined behavioral and electrophysiological tests reveal these neurophysiological deficiencies.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Audiology
  • Developmental Psychology

Background:

  • Listening difficulties (LiD) in children can be associated with auditory processing disorders (APD).
  • Assessing auditory abilities requires a combination of behavioral and electrophysiological methods.
  • Understanding APD in children with LiD is crucial for effective intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify auditory processing abilities in children with LiD.
  • To evaluate auditory function using both behavioral and electrophysiological measures.
  • To compare auditory processing in children with LiD to typically developing (TD) children.

Main Methods:

  • Included 10 children with LiD and 10 TD children (ages 8-10).
  • Administered behavioral auditory processing, attention, and phonemic synthesis tasks.
  • Utilized click and speech auditory brainstem responses (ABR) for electrophysiological assessment.

Main Results:

  • Children with LiD demonstrated significantly poorer performance on most behavioral auditory tasks.
  • LiD group showed smaller click-ABR wave I amplitude and longer speech-ABR waves D and E latencies.
  • No significant differences in neural correlates were found between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • Combined behavioral and ABR testing effectively identifies auditory processing deficits in children with LiD.
  • Neurophysiological deficiencies, particularly at the brainstem level, are evident in children with learning and listening issues.
  • This multimodal approach enhances the understanding of APD in pediatric populations.
