Summary

Biofeedback training improved constipation in children and adult females with decreased rectoanal inhibitory reflex (RAIR) amplitude. However, it did not resolve constipation in adult females with anal hypertonia and ultra slow waves (USW).

Background:

  • Constipation is often associated with abnormal anorectal motility.
  • Specific motility disorders include decreased rectoanal inhibitory reflex (RAIR) amplitude and anal hypertonia with ultra slow waves (USW).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of biofeedback training in patients with constipation and abnormal anorectal motility.
  • To assess the impact of biofeedback on RAIR amplitude, USW, and constipation recovery.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-two patients (20 children, 26 adult females) with constipation and abnormal anorectal motility were enrolled.
  • Biofeedback training was administered to condition patients to relax the anal sphincter during defecation attempts.
  • Patients were assessed for changes in RAIR amplitude, USW, and constipation status post-training.
