Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • Transposition flaps, particularly the Limberg and Dufourmentel flaps, are standard for scalp defect reconstruction.
  • The Dufourmentel flap, an enhancement of the Limberg flap, improves vascularization by widening the flap base.
  • While effective for various reconstructive needs, specific applications like reconstructing hexagonal defects remain less explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a novel modification of the triple Limberg flap using three Dufourmentel flaps.
  • To present the successful reconstruction of a hexagonal scalp defect using this modified triple Dufourmentel flap technique.
  • To highlight the flap's utility for large, complex defects requiring significant tissue transfer.

Main Methods:

  • A hexagonal scalp defect was surgically removed.

  • Three Dufourmentel flaps were designed and mobilized.
  • The defect was reconstructed using the combined triple Dufourmentel flap.
  • Main Results:

    • The triple Dufourmentel flap successfully reconstructed the hexagonal scalp defect.
    • The flap demonstrated high viability and provided ample skin tissue for coverage.
    • The technique proved effective for a large-scale scalp reconstruction.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified triple Dufourmentel flap is a viable and effective method for reconstructing large hexagonal scalp defects.
    • This technique offers a versatile solution for complex reconstructive challenges in plastic surgery.
    • The flap's high viability makes it suitable for extensive tissue replacement in various anatomical locations.
