Summary

Laparoscopically induced keloids (LIK) are uncommon but can form after abdominal surgery, particularly laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The presence of non-keloid scars may reduce LIK severity.

Background:

Keloid formation typically occurs on the chest, back, and earlobes.
Laparoscopically induced keloids (LIK) are rare, with limited existing knowledge.
Abdominal skin is an uncommon site for keloid development.

Purpose of the Study:

To review case series of laparoscopically induced keloids (LIK).
To analyze the characteristics and contributing factors of LIK.
To understand the relationship between LIK and non-keloid scars.

Main Methods:

Retrospective and descriptive study design.
Analysis of patient clinical records.
Scar severity assessment using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale.

Main Results:

Twenty-four patients with LIK were identified.
LIK commonly occurred under the xiphoid process and umbilicus.
41.7% of patients developed keloids at trocar sites, with two distinct types observed.
The presence of non-keloid scars was associated with reduced LIK severity.

Conclusions:

Laparoscopic procedures can induce keloid formation.
LIK present with unique characteristics based on incision type.
Non-keloid scar presence may mitigate LIK severity.
