Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a phytocannabinoid that primarily interacts with the CB1 receptor, a type of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) predominantly in and around the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) and emetic center. Background:

  • Chronic pain is a significant challenge for individuals with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore patient-reported outcomes of medical cannabis for pain management in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
  • To assess the efficacy and side effects of medical cannabis in this population.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey was administered to 56 participants with CMT.
  • The survey collected data on demographics, medical cannabis use, pain symptomology, efficacy, and adverse effects.

Main Results:

  • 90.9% of respondents reported experiencing pain; 91.7% indicated cannabis provided at least 50% pain relief.
  • Significant reductions in opiate, sleep, and anxiety/antidepressant medication use were reported.
  • 23.5% experienced side effects, but most did not plan to discontinue use.

Conclusions:

  • The majority of CMT patients perceive medical cannabis as effective for pain management.
  • Findings support the need for rigorous, controlled trials to optimize cannabis-based pain treatment for CMT.
  • Physician attitudes influence patient disclosure of medical cannabis use.
