Summary

Congenital heart defects caused aortic valve insufficiency in a young horse. Echocardiography and necropsy revealed fibrotic aortic valve leaflets and fenestrations, confirming the diagnosis.

Background:

Aortic insufficiency is a serious cardiac condition in horses.
Early diagnosis and understanding of underlying causes are crucial for prognosis.

Observation:

A 1-year-old colt presented with a significant heart murmur and bounding pulse, indicative of aortic insufficiency.
Echocardiography revealed key signs including mitral valve leaflet fluttering and left ventricular volume overload.

Findings:

Necropsy confirmed moderately thick, fibrotic aortic valve leaflets.
Fenestrations (holes) were identified in both the aortic and pulmonic valve cusps.
These pathological findings support a diagnosis of congenital valvular disease.
