Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

205
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder01:30

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

176
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry that persists for at least six months, significantly interfering with daily functioning. Unlike situational anxiety, which arises in response to specific stressors, GAD often occurs without a clear cause. Individuals may experience disproportionate worry about work, health, or relationships. For instance, a person might continuously fear poor health despite normal medical evaluations or...

Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

193
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Anorexia Nervosa01:28

Anorexia Nervosa

165
Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. It often leads to dangerously low body weight relative to an individual's age and height. This disorder is marked by significant physical and psychological consequences, making it one of the most life-threatening psychiatric illnesses.

Panic Disorder01:27

Panic Disorder

161
Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent and sudden minutes-long episodes of intense fear, known as panic attacks. These attacks may feel like heart attacks and often happen without warning or a specific cause. They can include symptoms such as rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, chest pain, trembling, sweating, dizziness, and a sense of helplessness. During a panic attack, individuals may feel as though they are experiencing a heart attack or are in a...

Dissociative Identity Disorder01:30

Dissociative Identity Disorder

170
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), previously termed multiple personality disorder, is a complex psychological condition characterized by the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states. Each identity exhibits unique patterns of behavior, voice, and mannerisms and may possess separate memories and emotional responses. The alternating control between identities can result in memory gaps and challenges in recalling daily activities, often exacerbating the individual's...

Summary

Women with substance use disorders (SUDs) and trauma histories can be categorized into three groups based on trauma severity. Higher trauma levels correlate with more severe SUDs, informing trauma-informed treatment approaches.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Trauma Studies

Background:

  • Trauma and substance use disorders (SUDs) frequently co-occur, particularly in women.
  • Previous research has explored trauma history categorization, but few studies focused specifically on women with SUDs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify distinct classes of trauma exposure among women with past-year substance use problems.
  • To examine the relationship between trauma class, substance use patterns, and SUD severity in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Latent class analysis was employed.
  • 130 women with self-reported past-year substance use problems completed measures of lifetime trauma exposure, substance use patterns, and SUD severity.

Main Results:

  • Three trauma classes emerged: Low (40%), Moderate (23.8%), and High (36.2%) Lifetime Interpersonal Trauma.
  • No significant differences were found in substance use frequency or polysubstance use across classes.
  • SUD severity was significantly higher in the Moderate and High trauma classes compared to the Low trauma class.

Conclusions:

  • Women with substance use problems should receive trauma-informed SUD treatment.
  • The findings suggest that not all women with SUDs and trauma histories may require integrated trauma and substance use interventions, differentiating treatment needs based on trauma severity.
