Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
  • Recalcitrant psoriasis presents significant treatment challenges.

Observation:

  • A young patient with childhood-onset recalcitrant psoriasis experienced severe generalized pustular psoriasis.
  • The exacerbations occurred on multiple occasions.

Findings:

  • Penicillin and penicillin-related drugs were identified as the causative agents.
  • The drug-induced psoriasis was severe and generalized.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider drug-induced psoriasis in patients with severe or atypical psoriasis presentations.
  • Awareness of penicillin's potential to trigger pustular psoriasis is crucial for patient management.
