Summary

Nonlinear EEG analysis did not correlate with depression as expected. However, this study found sex differences in brain complexity patterns, suggesting further research into sex-specific neurophysiology in psychopathology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between EEG complexity measures and depression.
  • To examine the stability and consistency of EEG complexity metrics.
  • To explore potential sex differences in EEG complexity patterns.

Main Methods:

  • Resting-state EEG recordings from 306 subjects (including depressed and history of depression groups) across multiple sessions and days.
  • Calculation of Higuchi fractal dimension (HFD) and sample entropy (SampEn) using three EEG montages (mastoids, average, Laplacian).
  • Analysis of both eyes open and eyes closed conditions.

Main Results:

  • EEG complexity metrics demonstrated high internal consistency and cross-day stability.
  • Higher EEG complexity was observed in eyes-open compared to eyes-closed conditions.
  • No significant correlation was found between EEG complexity and depression status.
  • An unexpected sex effect revealed distinct topographic complexity patterns between males and females.

Conclusions:

  • Despite the lack of correlation with depression, EEG complexity metrics are reliable and stable.
  • The observed sex differences in topographic complexity patterns warrant further investigation in psychopathology.
