Insights

Perinatal mental disorders are highly prevalent in Cameroonian women, affecting over half of those studied. Key risk factors include pre-delivery anxiety and lack of social support, necessitating urgent screening and management strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Psychiatry
  • Global Health

Background:

  • Perinatal mental disorders affect a significant proportion of women in developing countries.
  • Data on perinatal mental illness prevalence and risk factors in Cameroon is scarce.
  • The Yaoundé Gynaeco-Obstetric and Paediatric Hospital is a key reference center for maternal and child health in Cameroon.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of perinatal mental disorders among women at the Yaoundé Gynaeco-Obstetric and Paediatric Hospital.
  • To identify risk factors associated with perinatal mental illness in this population.
  • To explore the relationship between identified risk factors and the occurrence of perinatal mental disorders.

Main Methods:

  • A hospital-based, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted.
  • Data was collected through structured and semi-structured interviews, including validated psychiatric assessments.
  • Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 23.0.

Main Results:

  • The overall prevalence of perinatal mental disorders was 53.6%, with 25.8% in pregnant and 27.8% in postnatal women.
  • Depression (45.8%), risk of suicide (17%), and perinatal anxiety (10.3%) were the most common disorders.
  • Severe anxiety before delivery and lack of social support were significant risk factors (p < 0.05 and p = 0.005, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • The prevalence of perinatal mental disorders is alarmingly high at the studied hospital in Cameroon.
  • Institutional screening and management programs for perinatal mental health are urgently needed.
  • Further research is recommended to assess the situation in other Cameroonian health facilities.

Prevalence and Incidence01:08

Prevalence and Incidence

In statistical epidemiology and health sciences, two essential metrics—prevalence and incidence—are fundamental for understanding disease dynamics within a population. These measures enable public health officials, epidemiologists, and researchers to assess the burden of diseases, allocate resources effectively, and design impactful public health policies and interventions.
Prevalence indicates the proportion of individuals in a population who have a specific disease or health...

Introduction to Psychological Disorders

Abnormal behavior, often referred to as mental illness, results from changes in brain function that influence thought patterns, behaviors, and social interactions. Psychologists and psychiatrists typically assess abnormal behavior using three primary criteria: deviance, maladaptation, and personal distress, particularly when these traits persist over long periods.
Deviant Behavior
Deviance in behavior refers to actions or thought patterns that significantly diverge from societal norms or...

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-I

Specialized care settings or centers are situated in convenient locations within the community and offer care to a specific group or population. They consist of daycare facilities, mental health facilities, rural health facilities, educational institutions, industries, shelters for the homeless, and rehabilitation facilities.
