Bones of the Upper Limb: Humerus

The upper limb consists of the arm, forearm, wrist, and hand bones. The humerus is the single bone of the upper arm region. Summary

A 49-year-old woman with chronic glenohumeral osteomyelitis underwent a 2-stage soft-tissue shoulder interposition arthroplasty. This procedure successfully controlled pain and prevented reinfection, offering a viable alternative for high-risk patients.

Background:

A 49-year-old female patient presented with severe shoulder dysfunction and pain two years post-arthroscopic surgery.
Evaluation revealed chronic glenohumeral osteomyelitis and irreparable damage to the humeral articular surface.

Observation:

A two-stage soft-tissue shoulder interposition arthroplasty was performed to address the joint's instability and damage.
The surgical approach aimed to rebalance the glenohumeral joint.

Findings:

Long-term follow-up demonstrated significant functional improvement and effective pain management.
No evidence of reinfection was observed post-procedure.

Implications:

This interposition arthroplasty technique serves as a functional salvage option for patients with high reinfection risk or those unsuitable for prosthetic joint replacement.
The study highlights the potential of this approach in managing complex shoulder osteomyelitis cases.
