Female adolescents engage in less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) than recommended. Daily MVPA averaged 44 minutes, with less activity during school hours, indicating a need for targeted interventions.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Adolescent Health
- Exercise Science
Background:
- Physical activity (PA) declines with age, particularly in adolescent females.
- Understanding female adolescent PA is crucial for public health initiatives.
- Current PA levels among middle school girls require investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To understand moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) behavior in female adolescents.
- To establish baseline MVPA data within a female-specific PA program.
- To contextualize PA levels in middle school girls.
Main Methods:
- Collected baseline MVPA data from over 600 6th-8th grade female students.
- Utilized the Youth Activity Profile to assess PA levels.
- Analyzed data for differences across grade, race/ethnicity, and time (school vs. home, weekdays vs. weekends).
Main Results:
- Average daily MVPA was 43.93 minutes, below the 60-minute recommendation.
- No significant differences in MVPA were found based on grade or race/ethnicity.
- PA was lower during school hours (9.45 min) compared to home (34.04 min).
Conclusions:
- Adolescent female MVPA falls short of public health guidelines.
- PA levels are significantly lower during school compared to non-school time.
- Innovative and sustainable PA interventions targeting adolescent females are needed.
