1Department of Pharmacy, National Cancer Centre Singapore, Singapore, Singapore.
Pharmacy trainees reported improved perceptions of their educational environment following a curriculum reform in Singapore. Satisfaction increased, though perceptions varied by setting and decreased after graduation.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacy Education
- Curriculum Reform
- Healthcare Professional Training
Background:
- Educational reforms are crucial for aligning pharmacy curricula with evolving healthcare demands.
- Assessing learners' perceptions of the educational environment is vital for quality assurance in academic programs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate pharmacy trainees' perceptions of their educational environment before and after a curriculum reform.
- To evaluate the strengths and areas for improvement within the new pharmacy curriculum.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective cohort study involving pharmacy trainees in Singapore.
- Utilized a modified Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (mDREEM) survey.
- Employed univariate analysis to compare responses between old and new curricula.
Main Results:
- A total of 1200 responses were analyzed (523 old, 677 new curriculum).
- Global mDREEM scores significantly increased from 150.4 (old) to 156.2 (new) curriculum (P < 0.001).
- Trainee satisfaction with the educational environment improved post-reform, but perceptions varied across settings and were lower after graduation.
Conclusions:
- Curriculum reforms can positively alter pharmacy trainees' perceptions of their educational environment.
- Trainees' perceptions evolved during the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate training.
- Further research is needed to understand the causal links between curriculum design, implementation, and perceived educational environment.
