    Summary

    Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) resulted in better uncorrected visual acuity and required less phacoemulsification energy compared to standard phacoemulsification. FLACS offers advantages, particularly for complex cataracts.

    Background:

    • Cataracts are the primary cause of global blindness.
    • Phacoemulsification is the current standard for cataract treatment.
    • Advancements in surgical technology aim to improve patient outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare postoperative results of standard phacoemulsification with femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS).
    • To evaluate visual acuity and energy usage in both surgical techniques.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective evaluation of 80 cataract surgeries (May 2017-March 2019).
    • Patients received either FLACS (n=45) or standard phacoemulsification (n=35).
    • All patients received an AT LISA 839 trifocal intraocular lens.

    Main Results:

    • FLACS group showed significantly higher uncorrected distance visual acuity (0.93 ±0.12 vs. 0.85 ±0.18, p=0.021).
    • FLACS group also demonstrated significantly higher uncorrected near visual acuity (0.84 ±0.17 vs. 0.77 ±0.18, p=0.034).
    • Phacoemulsification energy usage was significantly lower in the FLACS group (2.2 ±3.1 vs. 3.5 ±3.1, p=0.005).

    Conclusions:

    • FLACS assists surgeons with capsulorhexis and nuclear pre-fragmentation, beneficial for complex cataracts.
    • Higher uncorrected visual acuity and lower phacoemulsification energy were observed with FLACS.
    • Femtosecond laser technology shows promise in enhancing cataract surgery outcomes.
