Summary

Background:

  • Advanced cancer patients with bone metastases frequently experience unmet palliative care (PC) needs.
  • These needs may be overlooked in routine oncological clinical practice.
  • The Palliative Radiotherapy and Inflammation Study (PRAIS) provided a setting to identify and address these needs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe palliative care interventions initiated during the PRAIS study.
  • To evaluate the benefit of study participation on palliative care needs.
  • To hypothesize that PC interventions by the study team would benefit patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of electronic medical records of patients in the PRAIS study.
  • Inclusion criteria: advanced cancer with painful bone metastases.
  • Documentation of interventions initiated by the study team before radiotherapy and after Patient Reported Outcome Measures completion.

Main Results:

  • Interventions were initiated in 50% of 133 reviewed patients.
  • Common interventions included opioid management (69%), constipation (43%), nausea (24%), and nutritional advice (21%).
  • Patients receiving interventions had lower Karnofsky performance status, shorter survival, and were more often opioid-naïve.

Conclusions:

  • Patients with advanced cancer and bone metastasis benefited from PC interventions initiated during study participation.
  • Findings suggest a need for systematic integration of PC in advanced cancer care.
  • Study participation facilitated the delivery of crucial palliative care interventions.
